Comments about theBalm BalmShelter SPF 17 Tinted Gloss, Pinup Girl, .19 oz:

I really like this for a daytime casual look for the office or just running errands. It's not a deep enough color for nighttime or special occasions. It really is a very sheer color but definitely looks like a lipstick or stain and doesn't feel sticky or look really really shiny. It is a nice, smooth, moisturizing formula. I like it much better than other colored balms I've tried. Most of those are too shiny or don't have enough color. This one is just right. Pin-Up Girl doesn't actually look red though, just enhances your own natural lip color, so on me it looks like a medium rosy color.

    VERY sheer, lightweight, good SPF

Comments about theBalm BalmShelter SPF 17 Tinted Gloss, Pinup Girl, .19 oz:

I got the Pinup Girl color, expecting, at the very least, a light, but noticeable, wash of color. I have medium skin coloring so I had a pretty good idea of how this color would look on me but I was wrong. Pinup Girl looks like a bright, classic red, in the tube, but for anyone except people with very, very light skin coloring or very lightly-pigmented lips, it is actually so sheer you may not even notice anything at all.

I was attracted to this product because of it's very good SPF rating and effective sunscreen ingredients, avobenzone being the main one, but apart from moisturization and sun-protection, this lip gloss is nothing more than a clear gloss. I mention this because just based on the theBalm company site, this particular product comes in a quite a few colors, but after having tried one of the 'brightest' colors in their line, I have to wonder why bother with any color at all???

I know this product comes in a Clear option as well (which I also bought), but I think theBalm should have just stuck with that. If the 'brightest' color is this sheer, I don't see how any of the more lighter or more muted colors would make any more of a difference.

Besides the lack of 'color,' this product is very good, if not a little underwhelming. The SPF is always good, and the sheerness is good too, if you think about how many people this can cater to, but the formula is actually quite light, very slick. It feels kind of like running a layer of vegetable oil over your lips. It's good for prepping and priming your lips but any additional product such as lipstick or lipliner will slide right off. And in more extreme weather, such as heat or cold, I don't know how well this will stay on. Lucky for me I live in a pretty temperate, mild climate but I'm sure some people might try this out while outdoors...

I will continue to use this for basic moisturization and sun-protection but I won't be relying on this for color.
