so here's the breakdown:
I have a fairly oily T-Zone. I also have some sun damage (fine lines, even though I'm 25) with large pores that makeup settles into and creases. I also rarely wear makeup unless I'm going out (and then I go big or go home ^_-)
I use this after my moisturizer dries, and before makeup if I'm wearing any that day. I dab about a pinky nail sized amount all over my face and rub it in. You need to work fairly quickly or it can streak (although if it does, just dab some water and smooth it around, blending out with your fingertips. It also streaks if you put too much on and can look like a white powdery/flaky spot). This is definitely not something to apply all over the face unless it's needed, and do not apply it to dry spots. It dries clear and very matte.
As a mattifier, it works quite well. I'll blot about 4 hours after I put it on, and I'm good for another few hours (but then, I'm not a fan of the 'dewy' look if I'm going out.)
To put this in perspective, I get noticeably greasy in about 30 minutes without anything on my face. Makeup will get shiny within the hour in the summer. If my face is bare, glasses don't stay put after a couple hours.
3 tubes will last the entire year for me, with nearly daily use. I'm not particularly sensitive to cosmetics, so I can't speak for that.
So: apply sparingly and onyl where needed, work quickly, and LET IT DRY BEFORE PUTTING MAKEUP ON. Smashbox says you can wear it over makeup, but in my experience, it's too sticky to avoid messing up whatever powder/foundation you have on.

In my continuing saga to find mattifying products, I stumbled upon this Smashbox product. Smashbox is a bit like the "holy grail" of anti-shine/primers, so I had high hopes for this. It comes in a nice sized tube that fits well in my purse for touchups throughout the day. I need about a dime-sized blob to cover my entire face. On first application, I kind of felt a tingly feeling, but when I looked in the mirror, I saw my skin transformed! Yes, it works that quickly. My skin was totally matte, very nice porcelain smooth appearance. Wow...but an hour later, at work, someone told me I had a smudge on my cheek. On inspection I saw it was residual Smashbox gel. when I tried to rub it into my skin, it balled up and grew clumpy. Yuck.
Now, a few mornings when I apply this, it will do the "clump" thing. Yet some mornings, it will not clump up. I guess it depends on how soon after I shower I apply this....haven't figured it out yet.

Once you've worked with this you won't want to use anything else to keep your face from looking shiny in humid weather. I've tried many other mattifiers but find that I have to keep blotting my face all day. You will not have that problem with this product. It's pretty drying so you have to use it with moisturizer, either before or after you apply. Once it's dry I like to use loose powder foundation or any kind of compact foundation rather than liquid. This keep my face looking matte all day.

The most important thing about this product is learning how to apply it correctly. You only need a pea sized amount on the palm of your hand. Gently pull a small amount of the product from that pea size amount, and thinly rub it into your palm with your finger...then with that finger DAB it onto your nose, and small areas of your face at a time. You will need to repeat this process often until you have covered your entire face. Do NOT use a thick coating of the product, as it will leave streaking, and white marks on your face. It DOES take practice, but once you get the hang of it, it is wonderful! It makes your makeup last ALL DAY LONG without any shine at all, and no touch-ups needed EVER! I have very oily skin, especially in summer, and with Smasbox Antishine, I honestly NEVER have to touch up my makeup from morning till night! This product IS becoming harder and harder to find though!
It IS a little tricky to use, but with practice, it's well worth it!!

I purchased this based on the great reviews. Just powder over makeup doesn't do much for oil control and I need something to keep my face matte, at least for half the day. I use the oil blotting papers mid day if I can think of it, but sometimes they take my makeup off so I thought this would be great. You have to apply a VERY minimal amount, otherwise it makes your foundation look extremely cakey. It doesn't smoothe my makeup, I have to work around this because it tends to shift my liquid foundation when I'm applying it. I also have noticed 0% difference in oil control. My face isn't super oily, but whether it's with or without this product my nose needs blotting within an hour. What a waste...

This absolutely does what it says it will... stop shine. However, after a 12 hour shift @ the hospital, I found blackheads ALL OVER my nose. ALL OVER. I do have combo skin w/ oil esp. in the T-zone area, so this may be a contributing factor. Two pore strips later my nose is looking a bit better, but I could not believe how clogged it became after one use of this stuff! I am so on the fence about this product. Oily/Combo girls beware!

Comments about Smashbox Anti-Shine Powder-Gel, Neutral, 1 ea:
I read good reviews of this product elsewhere and bought it here because of the better price. It's meant to be used after moisturizer and before any makeup is applied, to provide a smooth matte base to start from. It does mattify fairly effectively for varying times according to your skin type (up to several hours), but it is thick and fast-drying and difficult to apply evenly and effectively over any significant area before it dries and leaves small white chunks or flakes on your skin.
If you have just a shiny nose or possibly just your T-zone that gets shiny, this may be a good product for you by itself. My entire face gets very shiny, so I need full coverage, which makes this not as good an option for me. Instead, I'm using this in combination with Seriously Shine Free Mattifying Moisturizer (which is considerably less expensive than this), which eliminates the need for a separate moisturizer and gives me a combination that's more effective against shine than the moisturizer alone but much, much easier to apply for full coverage than Smashbox Anti-Shine alone.

This product is such a great buy. It may seem pricey when you look at it but you don't have to use much so it will last. The product only needs to be applied to the areas of your face that get very oily not all over your face. I apply it to my T-zone area and put a second coat around my nose since that is where I tend to produce the most shine as the day goes by. It really does help to keep my make up looking fresh.

I have extremely oily skin-- my skin will stay matte for about an hour and then it's grease city. I usually use oil blotting sheets to keep it under control. This product however, is like a miracle. It extended the time my face gets very greasy from 1 hour to 4. My cheeks stayed matte but my nose and forehead got a little oily. Awesome product.

This product does work.....but it has a "powdery" appearance and does not blend in well. It looks like I'm wearing something when I put it on. However, it does block shine well. I'd be a big fan if not for the fact that Peter Thomas Roth "AntiShine" is available and works much better.....this alternative product blends in completely and blocks shine just as well. Perhaps women wouldn't be as concerned about this, but as a guy, it's important to me NOT to look like I'm wearing makeup......
