Hope in a Jar is a very basic, no-frills, daily moisturizer that helps skin retain moisture, makes fine lines look plumped-up, and makes skin feel soft. It's light and completely greaseless, so it can be worn under makeup or layered over an antiaging treatment for day and/or night wear. I like it, but don't love it, for two completely personal reasons: 1.Essential Oil: It contains lavender essential oil. This isn't an inherently bad thing, but, for some reason, when I use anything with lavender, after a few days it begins to feel like hydrochloric acid on my skin, causing my skin to become red, irritated, bumpy, and painful. (I tried Hope in A Jar for Dry, Sensitive Skin, and, unfortunately, it also has lavender as well as sage oils.) For centuries many, many, many people have found lavender to be soothing and helpful for skin, so my experience with it is a "red flag" only to others who are sensitive to/allergic to lavender oil. Most people love lavender in skin care, so it may be wonderful for your skin. 2. The Smell: When sniffed from the jar, this moisturizer smells fresh, with a soft lavender smoothness. Unfortunately for me, it smells really bad when it's on my skin. This smell lasts all day, and I constantly found myse;f thinking I smelled a "wet long-haired cat." In bed, my husband wondered outloud, "What stinks?" (Me.) In more concrete terms, it smells like Vaseline mixed with moth balls. Even though I've made a lot of negative statements about this moisturizer, I still recommend trying it (unless you have the above issues with lavender and odor malfunctions, of course). Hope in A Jar has a wonderful airy texture, like Cool Whip for the face, and it truly helps keep moisture in skin. I have no idea if it contains exfoliants or healthy amounts of antioxidants or such, but as far as I can tell it's a fine moisturizer. I think it's one of the biggest selling moisturizers in the entire world, so it must do something right!

I have used a few jars of this and really do like it, it's expensive but lasts a long time. Some people seem bothered by the smell but it really doesn't smell that strong to me.
This jar seems thinner, more watery than others I've used though don't know if I got a bad jar or they have changed the formula. Works the same I just don't think it will last as long.

Comments about philosophy hope in a jar original formula for all skin types, 2 oz:
When I first tried on the product, I felt some tingling, indicating that there was some sort of AHA or glycolic acid in the formula. Although the tingling was pretty light, those with the most sensitive of skins may still want to avoid this moisturizer is fruit or glycolic acids bother them. As many of the reviewers have previously mentioned, the light, souffle-like quality of this moisturizer makes it okay for almost all skin types. However, the hydration it provides is so effective and long-lasting that dry skin types may still like the formula. A major downside of this product, as many others have mentioned also, is the truly terrible smell. I don't know what is in the formula that causes the smell, but Philosophy should consider adding a scent that negates or masks the horrible smell.

Awful, smells like a very dirty nasty wet dog. The odor is very strong and does not go away. It's ridiculous to have this hefty price tag on something that smells this bad.

Comments about philosophy hope in a jar original formula for all skin types, 2 oz:
I got serious allergy and break out acne after using it for a week. I thought it was because of the disinfectant fluid in the swimming pool. So I stop using any skincare product after my skin recovered. 2 weeks later I continued to use this product and got serious allergy and broke out again!! therefore, I thought it immediately.

Comments about philosophy hope in a jar original formula for all skin types, 2 oz:
I received this as part of a Philosophy kit. My previous experience with Philosophy body products (the body wash/shampoo stuff was really bad and very, very drying to my skin) so I had less than high hopes for this. Hope in a Jar is a really good product I use it only at night after using my Clarisonic. For me, my skin gets a little oily overnight using heavy duty intensive moisturizers. I have combo skin, 34 yrs old, and this routine seems just right for now. I did not care for it for day time wear. Somehow my make up was sliding off after letting this absorb for ten minutes or more, but my skin did NOT feel oily to the touch, it's hard to explain. Also, when I used this twice a day I started to break out. I use another anti-aging moisturizer for daytime (with SPF & UVA protection).

Comments about philosophy hope in a jar original formula for all skin types, 2 oz:
I do like this lightweight moisturizer when I'm not planning on spending time in the sun during the day (the original formula, which is the only one I've used, does not have sunscreen). It does seem to provide a nice glow to the skin and the texture is pleasant to apply. It soaks in quickly and does not leave any greasy residue whatsoever. It's light texture does make it a less than ideal night cream or winter moisturizer for those of us of a certain age or those of us living in harsh climates. However, during the hot summer months, I do often find myself using it as a night moisturizer as well. I have been using this product for several years and do remember getting numerous compliments a few weeks after I started using it. It also contains Lactic Acid, which is helpful in evening skin tone, something I can always use help with. I will continue to buy and use this product.

Comments about philosophy hope in a jar original formula for all skin types, 2 oz:
I've been wanting to try Hope in a Jar forever and finally purchased. I have pretty dry skin in the winter but was scared off of the dry skin version because of some bad reviews. I should have gone with my first instinct! If you have dry winter skin this is not the moisturizer for you!!! This is a great lotion, but would be better suited to combination or normal winter skin. Sadly, I will save this jar for the spring and will be purchased Hope in a Jar for Dry, Sensitive Skin.
