Within a few years of arriving in the states from his native Naples, Oscar opened his own salons in New York City and became one of the most sought-after hair dressers among celebrities and socialites alike. In 2005, he launched his eponymous line of elegant treatments and styling solutions, a botanical-infused collection inspired by his love of hair and his passion for helping women express themselves confidently.
Q: What’s the best thing about your job?
A: I love to give a woman a great haircut and see the transformation in her face. The best is when a client is looking for a makeover. My job is to maximize beauty and disguise imperfections.
Q: What’s the must-have product from your brand?
A:Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray. Washing your hair daily isn’t necessary. Doing so can strip the hair of essential oils, dry out the cuticle and lead to dull or brassy color. I urge my clients to go a few days without washing and use Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray to absorb any grease or excess product that builds up between washes. And my Pronto Invisible Volumizing Dry Shampoo is great for brunettes and finer hair types that need a boost in volume after a day or two.
Q: What do you predict will be the next hair trend?
A: Long hair will always be beautiful and classic, but I foresee a lot of girls trading in long styles for shorter, chicer cuts this fall. Think Karlie Kloss. As for color, I think there will be an emphasis on rich, natural hues. Less prominent highlights and shades that look like you were born with them.
Q: What’s your favorite hair look from Fall Fashion Week?
A: The sleek, parted ponies at Altuzarra were chic and achievable. I also loved the simple waves at DVF.
Q: Who is your beauty icon?
A: There are so many Old Hollywood stars that defined beauty, but the one who really comes to mind for me is Brigitte Bardot – she had the most incredible hair and it was such a huge part of her sex appeal.
Q: What inspires you?
A: My goal as a stylist and with my product line is to help people achieve beautiful styles. It’s important we take care of our hair – just like skin it ages and is sensitive to the elements and of course, to heat. I am big on using heat protectants that seal the cuticle (Pronto Dry Styling Heat Protect Spray and Jasmine Oil Serum) and products that maintain hair’s health (Pronto Dry Shampoo). I also love volume, so I’m always looking to develop products with volumizing properties.
Q: What is the most frequently asked question at the salon?
A: A very common question is, “but how will I recreate this look at home?” I tell them, “if you use the right products for your hair type and a good blowdryer with a nozzle, you will get your best blowdry –it’s the next best thing to going to the salon.” I also often hear, “when should I come back?” I tell them, “come back in 6-8 weeks, don’t wait longer. Your hair will be the perfect length for a trim then.”
Q: What’s your top tip for healthy hair?
A: Don’t wash your hair every day. Use a dry shampoo in between washing. I promise it’s worth it.
Q: What’s your latest Beauty.com discovery?
A: I’m pretty low maintenance, but these days I like Anthony Logistics for Men Instant Fix Oil Control. In my free time I race motorcycles and this product absorbs oil and sweat.
Q: Where do you get your grooming advice?
A: I read up on fashion and grooming trends in magazines like L’Uomo Vogue and GQ. And I have a lot of stylish friends and clients with whom I like to trade tips.
